first year

We begin with the fields or islands. Every 2 years the islands on the Westeinderplas are provided of a new layer of soil. This is done in Autumn or in Winter time bij profesional slush man, who collects the slush from the Westeinderplas, into his slush barge and bring it to one of the islands. The slush will be unloadid on the side and worked over the land bij a crane.

When the slush has dried a specialized compang will work the land with a milling- and digging machine so the land will be ready to plant the Lilac shrubs.

In spring the shrubs will be brought to the islands by a steel boat with a permanent deck, such a boat is called a Vlet.

The Lilacs are set aside in rows in a certain distance of eachother. The Lilacs are planted in rows with a fixed distance, dependent on age of the shrub. There are more young shrubs to a square meter then older shrubs.

The shrubs are put in rows broadwise by a cart with caterpillar tracks or by conveyorbelts. The caterpillar tracks are necessary because the peat soil doesn't have very much bearing-power. That is why we cannot use ordinary agriculture instruments.

Then we drill holes with a drill or a drill unit, which drills 3 holes at the same time. in each hole we plant a Lilac shrub.

The Lilacs are now making new roots and some offshoots.

Now during spring and Summer we keep the islands free from weed. We do so by hoen or , bear in mind the watery area by using chemical spray.

In Autumn and Winter we prune all shrubs. The shrubs have used all their energie in developing a good root system. So there are not many long stems grown on the shrubs. What has grown is short an thin and has not produced flowerbuds. This is not suitable for forcing.

We thin out the shrubs and prune the stems. We do leave short parts of the stems in order for them to bud in spring. The pruning we do whith pneumatic scissors to save strength and to prevent wear and tear of our joints
